Planning your first trip to Prague and looking for the top things to do? The capital of the Czech Republic is an alluring destination, famous for its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture. Whether you’re interested in historical landmarks or unique local experiences, Prague has something for everyone.

Here are the top 5 things to do in Prague for first-time visitors.

1. Explore Prague Old Town and Charles Bridge

One of the top places to visit in Prague is Prague Old Town (Staré Město). Start your exploration in the Old Town Square, where you’ll find the Astronomical Clock, a medieval wonder that draws crowds every hour. Impressive Gothic and Baroque structures surround the square, giving it a magical feel. After that, take a walk across the Charles Bridge, one of the most iconic attractions in Prague. Admire the statues of saints and soak in the picturesque views of Prague Castle and the Vltava River.

Tips:

  • Visit early in the morning or late at night to avoid the crowds.
  • Take time to explore hidden side streets for lesser-known treasures, including charming cafes and local shops.

The castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of Prague and gives visitors insight into the country’s rich history.

Tips:

3. Discover Lesser Town (Malá Strana) and John Lennon Wall

Lesser Town (Malá Strana) is a picturesque and quieter neighborhood located beneath Prague Castle. Stroll through its narrow, winding streets, visit the stunning Church of St. Nicholas, and relax in Wallenstein Gardens. Don’t miss the famous John Lennon Wall, covered in colorful graffiti symbolizing peace and freedom. This area is also home to some of Prague’s best local restaurants and bars.

Tips:

  • For the best photos, visit the John Lennon Wall early in the morning, before the crowds arrive.
  • Explore the local restaurants offering traditional Czech cuisine for a memorable dining experience.

4. Spend a day at Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo is consistently ranked among the best zoos in the world, making it one of the top attractions in Prague for families and animal lovers. Located in the Troja district, the zoo is home to over 5,000 animals and offers visitors the chance to see rare and endangered species in a beautiful natural setting. With various pavilions, including the impressive Indonesian Jungle and Elephant Valley, there is plenty to explore.

Tips:

  • Set aside at least half a day to fully explore the zoo and take advantage of the stunning views over the city.
  • Wear comfortable shoes as the zoo is spread across a large area with plenty of walking paths.

5. Try traditional Czech food and beer

Lastly, of the amazing 5 things to do in Prague, this one was my favourite. Trying traditional Czech food is a must for first-time visitors. Sample hearty dishes like goulash and the popular street food, kolache (a sweet pastry). No trip to Prague is complete without enjoying a local Czech beer, as the country is world-renowned for its brewing tradition. Czech food is one of my favorites, and after 5 days in Prague and trying different plates, I created a separate guide for where to eat cheap in Prague.

Tips:

  • Visit local pubs and traditional restaurants for an authentic Czech culinary experience.
  • Try not to eat in the city center for cheaper plates.
  • Follow my guide for the best and most budget-friendly food in Prague and visit my favourite place, Kolacherie.
